Day 1 - Connors' little town - the Bories............

This was a small little town - both in stature and area and Connor called it the town for his size people...........we agreed! This town was a wee surprise find and well worth the stop.  Bories dates back to the 17th century and is the name of the structures.  These structures are the most successful and spectacular examples of dry-stone-building - where they built using no mortar or binder, and use what is called the corbelled vault technique.  This technique was used in the 17th and 18th century and it is amazing to see them and to marvel at the skills that were needed to make them.  The stones are layed in such a way that water and snow run off them and warmth is kept in.  We noticed that the fires inside were always by the doors so that the borie would not get smoked out - great thinking.  They also had amazing communal ovens.............   There was also a very interesting movie about the bories at the beginning of our explore, in French of course, but with subtitles.  Connor flagged it and went off exploring and Loki stayed, however he had the hiccups which he was trying to control, but it ended up making us, and everyone else laugh, including him which just made the hiccups worse - eventually he had to leave!

The large communal oven - the boys reckon they lived on pizza!
