A day at Frioul Archipelago

Our Ferry to the Island.

Today we were up bright and early and getting ready to go to Frioul Archipelago - an island just off Marseille.  The ferry to Frioul cost 8 euros return.  Frioul is now a Conservatoire du Littoral (National Park) however its history is somewhat different...............

Ready for our beautiful ride...........................

For several centuries is was occupied by the military and used to either defent or threaten Marseille.  Various reminders of this military activity are still visitble today such as forts erected under Henri IV and Second Workld War bunkers..............

Our first stop was Fort de Ratonneau - a steep climb but a fort worth seeing .........

The port of Frioul in the background....................the island used to be two separate ones, but now has a walkway in between.........and yes we climbed up to see the fort on the other side.....................................

Next plan was to head down to the bottle and check out the hospital where they used to house the leppers........................

After our picnic lunch it was time to head to the other part of the island.............................


and up to the fort on the other side - yep - that square fort is where we are heading ...........

We made it - and the views are amazing!


This place is amazing - the beautiful white cliffs and amazing views of Marseille................






Time to head back to the town............................
Time for a week break - drinks and mussels!

 Then it was time to head home and see the Port of Marseille from the water...................................
