Karl and I went for a drive to see one of the 5 most beautiful cities in the department of Aveyron - Conques. This is me on the entrance to the city - it is in a beautiful stop on a hill - why they build these villages on the sides of cliffs is beyond us - beautiful but not very practical!
Conques, the jewel of Romanesque art
Pilgrims descended from the austere and wild Aubrac plateau towards the Lot valley and a major stop: Conques. In their thousands, they flocked to the Via Podiensis in search of their inner self.
At the end of the trail, the superb medieval village of Conques and its abbey-church with its splendid tympanum, which remains one of the most important centers of art and spirituality in the western world. Thanks to the relics of Sainte Foy, brought here from Agen in 883, Conques became one of the main stops on the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimageroute from Puy en Velay. This is still the case today, numerous walkers take to this historical trail, stopping in the heart of the village where they are welcomed by the monks.
Beautiful houses - more like Switzerland than France we thought -The beautiful streets of Conques
So pretty -
Karl looking cute -
Me looking cool - I think this shops name is fitting - Karl and I on an escapade
Karl taking time out to smell (or eat) the roses...........................
Pretty little streets -
A very cute little house beside the river on our way back to La Lautrec -
rivers are certainly up in this area
Conques was certainly well worth the drive on the crazy narrow roads that felt at times like we were driving up peoples drives, not on a road - anyway thankfully for the GPS we made it there and back in one peace - certainly a beautiful drive and a beautiful village.
